The Paddington Trio’s musical journey started there in 2020, and with the station being a crossing point for journeys from all over the UK and the world, it’s fitting that the trio is truly international, hailing from Finland (violinist Tuulia Hero), Ireland (cellist Patrick Moriarty) and the USA (pianist Stephanie Tang). Happily they’ve since made the UK their home, and within two years of meeting were the winners of the 70th Royal Over-Seas League Competition for Strings & Piano Ensemble.
That year also saw them work with Chamber Studio for the first time, starting from small beginnings with a consultation with our founder, the violinist Richard Ireland. That kickstarted what has become a (so far) five year relationship, with the Trio benefitting from mentoring from musical legends including Richard himself, pianists Alasdair Beatson and Susan Tomes, violinist Anthony Marwod and cellist John Myerscough. They’ve also taken part in our Visiting Professor series, with the eminent violinist and renowned musical mentor Eberhard Feltz.
This intense engagement with us (remember, this all happened over just a two year period) coincided with the rapid development of their career, winning no less than 5 awards, making appearances across the UK and internationally (including Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico), and making their concerto debut too. Their mission to “bridge the gap between new listeners and serious classical music enthusiasts” has clearly resonated with audiences.
With such deep involvement with our programmes it made sense for them to feature in our Hall One Masterclass series, with this most recent event seeing them learn from clarinettist and conductor Michael Collins, as they worked together on Messien’s Quartet for the End of Time in front of an audience of our friends and supporters.
The trio is clearly set for even greater things, and a recent Guardian review by Fiona Maddocks helps sum up their appeal nicely:
